Get ready as there is going to be a very special release on10th November 2014 (moved back from 20th October) Lisa Stansfield's 1989 debut album Affection marked the arrival of a defining voice in British soul, meeting with major critical acclaim and over five million sales worldwide. The unforgettable #1 All Around The World features alongside the club classics This Is The Right Time and What Did I Do To You?, the uplifting Live Together and the US hit You Can't Deny It. Good news for all you Northern Soul fans, the official soundtrack from the film, is now available for pre-order as a 2CD + DVD version - and can be purchased via Amazon including the 7” vinyl box set.
Or if you want to get the full hog and own the 7” box set, a signed copy of the Northern Soul book by Director Elaine Constantine and an exclusive limited edition A3 print via the official Northern Soul, then go to the official store: myplaydirect.com It would seem unjust to bypass an extremely significant milestone in history, especially when it comes to Lisa's musical career. Therefore there's no time like the present, because on this very day 25 years ago, (31st July 1989 to be precise) Lisa released her single "This Is the Right Time" in the UK. This song which was written by Lisa, together with her husband Ian Devaney and their former co- writer Andy Morris came several months after Lisa's massive chart success from her collaboration with Coldcut on "People Hold On". Jonathan More and Matt Black (Coldcut) returned the favour by producing the track for her. Remixes were later put together by Dave Dorrell, C.J. Mackintosh, Paul Witts and Eddie Gordon to name but a few. In August 1990, the double A-side single of "This Is the Right Time"/"You Can't Deny It" with U.S remixes was released in some selected European countries. Then in Japan, "This Is The Right Time" was released as a single on the 3rd October 1990. It went to number 13 in the UK charts, number 17 in Germany and number 20 in Austria. In the United States, it peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, but went to number 1 on the Hot Dance Club Songs and number 13 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. There were two official videos made to promote this single. The European version, was directed by Big TV! The U.S video for the North American market was directed by Jimmy Fletcher. Almost a year to the day after it's UK release, it was then released as Lisa's third single in North America on 30th July 1990. The U.S version included a previously unreleased track, "My Apple Heart". New remixes were then created by Shep Pettibone, Rodney Ascue and Yvonne Turner. Lisa and Ian, together with all your fans from around the world, we salute and thank you for the awe-inspiring music and impressive back-catalogue that you have cleverly created together over the years. We just ask one thing of you; Please keep it coming. Happy 25th Anniversary! Here's a selection of visuals of some of the commercially available versions, formats and mixes including a selection of the promo versions together with the two video releases below (thanks to Andrew Jensen for the visuals).

It was not easy being in two places at once. So Lisa's performance had to be pre-recorded earlier in the week before heading off on tour. Here's Lisa and the bands' "live" performance of "So Be it" as well as "Change" on the Aled Jones "Weekend" show this morning. "Change" During Lisa's stop over in Germany, she had time to catch up with some promotional interviews. This one was with the organisers of the "Women Of The World Festival" in Frankfurt (with a free bit of advertising by Lisa for "Creme 21" - quite an amusing finish to this) This was Lisa's fourth appearance at the infamous G-A-Y club night since 2001
(June 2001, February 2003, September 2004 and 3rd May 2014) we're all looking forward to plenty more! Says Lisa of So Be It - “This song is lovely to me. It’s all about being proud of being yourself and holding your head up high. We are what we are. So be it!”
If you missed Lisa on the radio this past Easter weekend (chatting to Tim Smith @ BBC Radio Oxford and also to Gareth O'Calloghan on Irish Radio Classic4fm) here's Lisa's interview with Simon Mayo (recorded 23rd April) talking about her new single "So Be It" and the upcoming tour. |
